Job Summary:

  • This position is for a Plant Specialist or Engineer with extensive experience and advanced subject matter knowledge in power plant control systems, data acquisition systems and instrumentation. In this position the individual will be expected to provide technical expertise in support of the operation of the eight utility boilers, steam turbines, two combustion turbines and associated equipment at the W.A. Parish Generating Station and PetraNova CCS Plant.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Performs field inspections, field measurements and equipment walk downs.
  • Supports and emphasizes the importance of Safety and Environmental over Production.
  • Administers inspection contracts and services.
  • Coordinates vendor contracts and services.
  • Provides project development and implementation including scope, specifications, estimates, schedules, budget tracking, execution, etc.
  • Interfaces with outside service contractors (turbine, generator, HRSG, etc).
  • Interprets inspection results and determines adherence to applicable codes and standards.
  • Acts as a liaison between inspection and customer/peer groups and between NRG and the authorized inspector.
  • Performs routine unit/equipment performance monitoring and testing.
  • Attends training in specialized areas of responsibility.
  • Prepares written reports with results of testing and inspection findings.
  • Provides verbal reports or summaries of technical subjects in a simplified and broadly understood manner.
  • Participates in and/or leads teams that focus on specific problem areas or needs for plant equipment (e.g. Root Cause Analysis, Change Analysis, PdM data, etc).
  • Coordinates activities with vendors and outside support groups.
  • Provides technical support to plant operations.
  • Supports troubleshooting efforts on plant equipment.
  • Provides outage support including pre-outage planning, contractor work scopes, schedule development, daily updates, conflict resolution, etc.

Working Conditions:

  • Normal office environment and/or outdoor work environment. Could include working at heights, high/low temperatures, and high humidity.
  • Plant environment working around rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials and chemicals.
  • Work overtime and non-standard hours as required, including availability for phone support at all times.
  • Occasional travel outside business area.
  • Use of PPE as required by NRG safety policies.

Minimum Requirement:

  • Associate’s Degree in Instrumentation Controls or related field and (5) years’ experience in the power plant industry, the chemical process industry, or oil/gas process plant industry in the I&C discipline, OR
  • Ten (10) years I&C experience in the chemical process industry, or oil/gas process plant industry, OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and five (5) years’ experience in the power plant industry, the chemical process industry, or oil/gas process plant industry in the I&C discipline.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Two (2) years project management experience in the I&C field including work management and planning/scheduling
  • Experience in testing, inspection and development/implementation of technical solutions of in-service power plant equipment.
  • Experience in the use of plant historians (PHD/PI).
  • Expertise of Bailey, Emerson, Forney, Siemens, Woodward, Honeywell, control systems, Sick emissions analyzers, gas telemetry, generator protective relays, AllenBradley PLC.
  • Expertise of computer software (Microsoft Office, Project, Teams, Sharepoint)

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects and activities in a high volume environment
  • Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written).
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Ability to read, understand and implement corporate policies and procedures.
  • Ability to read, write and understand English.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting, climbing stairs and ladders, and entering plant equipment to access, inspect and/or collect data.
  • Requires lifting as appropriate to perform duties and responsibilities.
