Job Description
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located in Golden, Colorado, has an immediate opening for a researcher focused on the cybersecurity policy. NREL’s Cybersecurity Science and Simulation Group is performing research to secure our energy systems from cyberattack, and to make them more resilient to disruptions of any type.
The successful candidate will support NREL’s partner organizations to analyze, establish, and implement cybersecurity plans and processes as well as to develop and implement approaches for monitoring and evaluating the cybersecurity of research and development projects. The role requires significant technical writing, presentation of research materials, and direct customer engagement. Travel will occasionally be required.

Basic Qualifications
This position will be hired at a Researcher I, II, or III level based on the following criteria. Degrees and relevant experience are expected to be in Cybersecurity, Engineering, Public Policy, or closely related fields.
Researcher I
Relevant Bachelor’s Degree . Limited use and application of engineering principles, theories and concepts. Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.
Researcher II
Relevant Master’s Degree . Or, relevant Bachelor’s Degree and 2 or more years of experience . General knowledge and application of engineering technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques. Training in team, task or project leadership responsibilities. Intermediate abilities and knowledge of practices and techniques. Beginning experience in project management. Good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
Researcher III
Relevant PhD. Or, relevant Master’s Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor’s Degree and 5 or more years of experience. Demonstrates broad understanding and wide application of engineering technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in technical writing for both expert audiences and general audiences
- Demonstrated experience with customer engagement, especially presentations (both developing presentations and publicly presenting them)
- Demonstrated experience working with customers to identify needs and requirements for deliverables
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated interest in cybersecurity technology and policy within energy domains relevant to NREL’s mission.
- Ability to hold and maintain a security clearance.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Researcher III / Annual Salary Range: $75,500 – $135,900
Job Profile: Researcher I / Annual Salary Range: $60,400 – $99,700
Job Profile: Researcher II / Annual Salary Range: $69,400 – $114,500
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position’s work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
