Hitachi ABB Power Grids is seeking a Senior Project Engineer for its San Jose, California location. This role is responsible for its Energy Market Management Systems division, that will be focused in delivering innovative solutions to Electricity Market systems around the globe.

Your responsibilities

  • Analyze and understand customer engineering, business and software requirements, propose technically feasible solutions, estimate required effort, identify risks and formulate implementation approach, assumptions and risk mitigation measures.
  • Design, develop, test, integrate and document high performance software applications for electrical engineering modeling, analysis, optimization and scheduling of electricity market operations and related work for customer projects, while following best engineering and software development practices.
  • support the project manager(s) and the project execution activities, such as participation in project meetings with the customer, coordination and planning of project engineering tasks, coordinating testing, installation, deployment, and support, as well as identifying project risks. Also keep the project tasks and schedule on track using scheduling tools like Microsoft® Azure DevOps (ADO)
  • Support business development in the area of sales opportunities, responding to RFPs and RFIs.
  • Support software releases and assist onsite/support teams with expert knowledge, problem analysis, troubleshoot and resolution of defects as required to bring issues to closure.
  • Actively research, further own knowledge and innovate our practice in electrical engineering modelling, analysis, optimization, operation, power system security and real time control and support of electricity market management systems.
  • Provide expertise, and technical leadership to electrical, optimization, modeling and integration engineers working across projects and represent the company internal and external discussions with internal stakeholders, customer meetings, industry gatherings.
  • Lead engineers, customers and support personnel in the planning, scheduling, execution, test, delivery and 24×7 support of electricity market management systems.
  • Must be willing to travel for short periods of time to visit or support customers around the world.

Your background

  • Ph.D. Degree or Master’s Degree with formal education in power systems modeling, power system operation analysis, or power systems optimization and a minimum 10 years of experience in successfully delivering electrical engineering applications to utilities and market operators with special emphasis in power system modeling, analysis or optimization.
  • Candidate must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for Hitachi ABB Power Grids in the United States.
  • Ten (5) years of experience successfully delivering Electricity Markets Energy Management Systems
  • Five (5) years of experience leading teams of 5 engineers in the successful delivery of Electricity Markets Energy Market Systems.
  • Experience with Power Systems CIM Network Modeling, Network Topological Analysis, Power Flow, Contingency Analysis, State Estimator, Security Constrained Unit Commitment, Economic Dispatch, Linear and Non-Linear Programming (Optimization), Sparse Matrix algorithms and numerical methods.
  • Experience developing power system applications and 24×7 redundant systems
  • Demonstrated programming skills in high performance, high programming level languages such as FORTRAN
  • Familiarity with mathematical modelling tools (AMPL/AIMMS) and optimization solvers (CPLEX and Gurobi)
  • Familiarity with Linux and AIX operating systems
  • Experience with complex enterprise integration and databases, enterprise bus and Oracle integration techniques.
